So you have a Fuel Sender in the fuel tank. This fuel sender has the Pump, Pressure Sensor and Fuel Level Sensor built into it. So it does multiple things. If the fuel level sensor fails, it can't read the fuel level. If it can't read the fuel level, the engine light will come on to notify you to have this checked so you don't run out of gas.
Of course I strongly suggest you have the car scanned to verify my thoughts on this. If I am correct, you want to get the part from the dealer. Do not get it aftermarket. Aftermarket electrical parts and sensors never work right
