About Our Service

What is YourMechanic?

YourMechanic provides car repair, maintenance, and diagnostics at the convenience of your home or office. Our expert, highly rated mechanics provide services in over 300 U.S. cities.

The service is not only convenient, it’s also more affordable. Since our mechanics are mobile, we have significantly lower overhead costs compared to auto shops. And as a national brand, we are able to negotiate better prices from auto parts vendors. We pass these savings on to you, with prices that are on average 30% less than local repair shops.

Through our website and mobile app, you can request quotes, book services, and access advice from expert mechanics. With your free online account, you can also view the maintenance schedule and track the service history of your car.

Why should I choose YourMechanic?
  1. Life is too short to waste it at shops and dealers. Let our certified mechanics come to you.
  2. You will love the easy of online booking, online payments, online service receipts and service records. Our mobile app will make it even easier for you to deal with car issues on the go.
  3. As a network of mobile mechanics, we don’t have the overhead costs like shops and dealers. As a national brand, we are able to negotiate better pricing from parts vendors than your local garages. You can save up to 30% through us.
  4. Total transparency will give you total trust: You can see mechanics’ work history, reviews and ratings from car owners in your community, their certifications and more. You will also get a detailed price breakdown with labor and parts information (no hidden fees and no shady markups).
  5. You will love having your own personal mechanic: Unlike shops and dealers where you are always talking to a service manager, you will work directly with a mechanic who will answer all your questions and give you advice. The work is done right in front of your eyes. You can choose to see how the work is done or you can go about your life while the mechanic is working right outside.
How does it work?
  1. Simply request a quote by providing your location, car, and services needed
  2. In most cases, we will give you a fixed-price quote instantly. You will see the breakdown of labor fees and parts costs. If an instant price is not available, we will send you a quote within one business day, often sooner.
  3. You can book an appointment by selecting a time that is convenient for you. Mechanics are available 7 days a week, 7am to 9pm. You will be matched with a mechanic who has the necessary expertise to perform the work on your car. You can see reviews of the mechanic before you book. Only customers who have completed an appointment with us can write a review -- this guarantees that all reviews are from real customers.
  4. Your mechanic will perform the service at the convenience of your home or office. A parking space, driveway, or garage is required; mechanics cannot perform work on the street.
  5. We bill your credit card only after the work is done. You can access your service report and receipt in your online account.
  6. All services are backed by our 12-month / 12,000-mile (whichever comes first) warranty.

Pricing

How can I get an estimate?

You can request an estimate online by selecting your location, car and services. In most cases, we will give you a price instantly. You will see the breakdown of labor fees and parts costs. There will never be any surprises or hidden costs. If an instant price is not available, we will send you a quote within 24 hours, usually sooner.

How is the price calculated?

We provide fixed upfront pricing for all services. All of our pricing is calculated by our online Fair Price Calculator that has the industry standard labor guide. All our parts pricing comes directly from our wholesalers. Our online pricing system is intended to be fair and impartial. We give you a fixed price per job. Whether the job takes less or more time than expected, you pay a fixed price.

Sample fair price calculation:

  • Timing belt kit (belt, water pump, tensioner, pulleys) replacement for a 1995 Honda Accord in Northern California:
  • Average time to do the job: 4.2 hours
  • Mechanic's hourly rate: $80
  • Fixed labor fees: $80 x 4.2 = $336 (please note: we don’t charge for time. we charge a fixed fee whether the job takes less or more time)
  • Parts from wholesaler: $198.30
  • Your fair price: $80 x 4.2 (labor fee) + $198.30 (parts) = $534.30
What is your hourly rate?

We don’t charge for our service based on time. We give you a fixed price upfront and you pay the same price whether it takes less or more time for the mechanic to complete the service. We calculate the price based on an estimated time and we apply a labor rate that varies by city - it can be anywhere between $60 - $90 depending on where you live.

Is it more expensive than going to shops and dealers?

As a network of mobile mechanics, we don’t have overhead costs like shops and dealers. As a national brand, we are able to negotiate better pricing from parts vendors than your local garages. For most services, we offer average savings of 30% compared to your local garages. The bigger the service, the more you save. For smaller services (e.g., oil changes), the cost may be slightly higher than the local shops because mechanics have to make certain minimum amounts to justify the cost of traveling to you. If you value your time, the convenience of a mechanic coming to you may easily justify spending a little more than local shops on those smaller services. And of course, you will always get a fixed upfront price before you book a service.

Is there an additional fee for the mechanic to come to my location?

No. We don’t charge a drive fee or convenience fee.

Is there a cancellation fee?

You may cancel your appointment for no charge at any time more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled start time of the appointment. If you cancel within 24 hours of the scheduled start time, YourMechanic will charge your credit card a $25 cancellation fee.

Am I supposed to tip the mechanic?

Our mechanics do not expect a tip of any kind. Instead of leaving a tip, please recommend the mechanic to all your friends. You may also want write a review on their profile and rate us on Yelp. Our mechanics get a higher pay from us if they have higher ratings on their profile and Yelp.

What if mechanic finds that my car needs more or less services than I had requested?

You’re always in control. If our mechanic finds your car doesn’t need all the services you requested, we’ll remove those unneeded services and lower your bill, right on the spot. If your car needs additional repair services, our mechanic will provide you with an itemized list of what you need. You can decide to accept or decline those additional services.

Is there a fee for a mechanic to diagnose my car?

Yes. We charge a diagnostic fee to come to you and diagnose your car. This fee covers the inspection and diagnostic time and cost of driving to you. The fee varies from $60-$90 depending on the city you live in.

What does the diagnostic service include?

If your car has a problem, you can book a mechanic to perform a diagnostic. A mechanic will come to your location and inspect your car. Our mechanics go through a step-by-step process to rule out or confirm any part(s) failures. Diagnosing a problem is a process. Sometimes the only way to prove that a part is defective is to replace it and recheck the car. Your mechanic will diagnose the car and then provide preliminary recommendations and repair estimates, based on their visual inspection and any tests performed. The inspection report may include photos, test results, audio notes, recommended services, and a service estimate (if applicable).

Does the inspection fee go towards the repair?

We currently charge an inspection fee, but we will credit that fee towards the repair. If you complete a diagnostic inspection and book the repair with us, we will apply the inspection fee you paid as a credit on the repair bill.

We do not bill your card until the service is complete.

Why is a credit card required to book an appointment?

Your credit card is not billed until the mechanic has performed all the services. If you need to reschedule, we will take care of this for you as well.

Parts

How do I know the parts are of good quality?

The parts team at YourMechanic has gone through a rigorous filtering process to select the brands that are best suited for your car. Our parts catalog has a list of approved brands for each type of car and each type of part. We take pride in having a network of mechanics that uses high-quality parts. Whenever possible, the parts used are OE parts or aftermarket parts that meet or exceed OEM service specifications. When reviewing your quote, you will see the brands of the parts. Each part is clearly marked as OE, OE equivalent or aftermarket.

Do you ever use Remanufactured or used parts?

We don’t engage in the business of supplying or installing used parts. Only in very rare cases do the mechanics in our network ever use remanufactured parts -- usually in older cars where the parts manufacturers have discontinued the production of new parts. In those rare cases, the parts will be clearly marked as “remanufactured” on your quote.

Can you help me find parts from junkyards or auto-recyclers?

We apologize, but we don’t engage in the business of sourcing parts from junkyards or auto-recyclers. In most cases, we prefer not to install parts that are used or sourced from junkyards due to liability issues.

Where are the parts coming from?

We buy parts from several vendors -- from local vendors to wholesale suppliers across the nation, allowing you to receive high-quality parts at reasonable prices. Currently there are over 100 warehouses nationwide that ship parts directly to our mechanics. Whenever possible, we prefer OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or OE-equivalent parts, and we think they’re better for your car. We also offer high-quality aftermarket parts, often from the same manufacturer as the original parts.

Can I provide my own parts?

Yes, you are welcome to buy your own parts and book one of our mechanics to install them. When reviewing your quote online, open the “price breakdown” tab, and click on “parts options.” From there, you can choose to remove all the parts from your quote. Please note: when you provide your own parts, our service warranty is voided.

Billing

How do I pay for the service?

We require a credit card to book an appointment, but we will only process the payment after the work is done. If you need to change the credit card number, you can give the mechanic a different card.

Where can I find my receipt?

We will email you a copy of the receipt and service report after the mechanic has finished working on your car. You can access your receipt any time through your online account.

How can I resolve my billing issues?

Please send an email to hi@yourmechanic.com or call 1-800-701-6230. Please provide your account information (phone number or email) when you contact us.

Mechanics

How do mechanics work with YourMechanic?

YourMechanic is a network of expert mobile mechanics. Independent mechanics apply to join our network. Every mechanic goes through an extensive screening process that includes background, criminal, and reference checks. Once approved, mechanics are booked for jobs through YourMechanic.

Your service agreement is with YourMechanic, not the individual mechanic. Although you are provided the service by the mechanics in our network, we stand behind the service with our 12-month, 12,000-mile warranty.

How are the mechanics screened?

Mechanics are screened through a two step process:

Step 1: We perform a background check, skills check, and one-on-one interview with the mechanic. About 5-10% of the mechanics who apply are approved.

Step 2: If the mechanic passes the screening process, we allow them to accept jobs from customers. Mechanics are rated by car owners after every job, and they have to a maintain a score of at least 4 out of 5 to continue to be part of our network.

Are the mechanics certified?

Most of our mechanics are certified by ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence). Some of our mechanics are certified by similar organizations and/or have dealer or factory training. You can see mechanics’ certifications on their profile online, which is accessible during the booking process. You can also review their experience, work history, jobs completed for other car owners, fees paid by other car owners, and real customers’ ratings and reviews. We take pride in being totally transparent.

How do I get a mechanic who specializes in my car (Honda, Ford, BMW etc.)?

Our system matches you only with a mechanic who is qualified to work on your car. Many of our mechanics have dealer or factory training with certain brands. Some of them have years of experience working on certain types of cars (e.g. German cars, domestic cars, etc). You can see their particular strengths and expertise on their profiles, as well as reviews from previous customers who own the same make of car as yours.

Warranty

What is the warranty on labor and parts?

We stand behind the workmanship and parts provided by mechanics on our platform. Every service booked through YourMechanic comes with our 12-month / 12,000-mile (whichever comes first) warranty, measured from the date the services are provided and the odometer reading shown on the applicable invoice. You can read the entire warranty document here and the customer agreement here.

How can I file a claim under this warranty?

To inquire about obtaining service under this Limited Warranty (if applicable), email us at hi@yourmechanic.com or call us at 1-800-701-6230 within the Warranty Period. When contacting us, please describe the nature of the problem and provide the email or phone number you used to request the service.

Do you carry proper liability insurance?

Yes. YourMechanic carries commercial general liability insurance for services performed by the mechanics in our network.
