How much is it for the question to be answered? Mechanic's Assistant: Okay, I'll connect you to the Mechanic to discuss this further with you. Before I do, is there anything else you want him to know? 2000 Ford f150 5.4 2v. It's making a tapping sound around 1200 to 1500 rpm after running for about 30 minutes. Only does when it's in gear not in neutral reving it.

Does the problem sound like a ignition preignition or actual [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) ticking noise.

It sounds like a tap noise, not a knock or a tick. I can hear coming through the dashboardIt does not do it at first but after about 30 minutes of the engine running I can hear it when I accelerate between 1000 and 1500 rpm

You may be hearing the EGR solenoid activating since it will not start using it until engine gets warmed up. This will sound like a solenoid going on and off and will only work when driving under light loads part throttle.

Ok could have that gone bad due to a vaccum line that connects to it. the mechanic that was working on my truck had to replace the vaccum line that I believe connects to the egr

It may of not been working before and now that it is you hear the noise. You do not have any check engine light on do you? Only way to verify this would be to get it to do it and disconnect EGR solenoid and see if noise goes away. If it does then it is solenoid and is normal operation. If still there then would need to actually hear noise to se if it is preignition due to running lean and may need mass airflow sensor replaced.

It actually started making the noise after the mechanic replaced my [spark plugs](/topics-spark-plug-ford/), coil pack and intake manifold. I have no check engine light on. It did have a random misfire, the mechanic said after he replace that vaccum line, the misfire was not showing anymore.

Is there anyway you can upload me a sound byte so I can hear the noise? Does it sound like an [exhaust](/topics-exhaust-ford/) leak? He may have a lose pipe to EGR or gasket at EGR that make noise when EGR starts opening. If intake was removed then he would of had the EGR valve and tube off.

Ok I see. I though it was an exaust leak it kind of sounds like it. However I juat got the exaust just got replaced and they said that it's fine. Im running the motor Im going to see if I can get you a sound bite
Automotive Expert
Ok. Let me know?

Automotive Expert

Automotive Expert

Ok just sent it, that's at about 1400 rpm that sound coming through dashboard
Automotive Expert
That definitely sounds like an exhaust leak. It may be EGR system or exhaust manifold leaking. Will have to have mechanic to listen to and locate what is leaking.

Ok Ill do that. Thank you for you're help and time. I appreciate it.
Automotive Expert
Anytime. Glad to help. You did excellent job providing me the information needed to narrow down issue to exhaust leak. Thanks and have a great weekend.

Thank you, \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\*!

Hey there. It sounds like you may have a mass air sensor problem (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/mass-airflow-sensor-replacement) or an intake leak between the throttle body (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/throttle-body-replacement) and mass air sensor.
