The popping noise is caused by the engine trying to start with a lack of fuel pressure. The pop is caused by a lean engine condition.
With the way you have the fault described on what occurred first with the loss of power to the no start, this sounds like the fuel pump has failed. The fuel pump is a common part that will fail on this model and causes this issue to where it has to be replaced.
A shop or dealer will need to test the fuel pressure and the power and ground signals at the fuel pump to verify this. They will usually charge around $100 to do this. The cost to have the fuel pump replaced can cost around $300 to $400 in most cases.

That is correct. It is the most common part that fails on this model and causes the issue you have described to where it has to be replaced.
