Hi i'm having trouble with my car starting the [engine](/topics-engine-chevy/) is turning over but will not kick in i've checked the [spark plugs](/topics-spark-plug-chevy/) Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the Chevrolet? When did you last check the plugs? Its a 1987 jeep wrangler 4.2l Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Spark yourself? What have you tried so far? I checked the spark plugs yesterday -they are fine Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? I don't think it is a fuel problem once it runs it runs fine

So I have seen this sort of problem on these engines and the most common issue is the crankshaft sensor.

Hi Kurt, I have a 1987 4.2l wrangler sportI am having real problems starting it at the momentI have checked the spark plugs - they are greatwhen it does eventually start - it runs really wellIt turns over no problem which makes me think it is not the starter motorthe battery is fine - i've checked that too and had it fully charged
Automotive Expert
so when it is not starting is it getting spark at the plugs, or will it start if you spray fuel into the throttle body.

how can i test if it is getting a spark at the plugs?ive tried starting with starter fluid and that doesn't make any dfference
Automotive Expert
pull a plug wire off the plug and use a screw driver and place it close to a ground and watch for a spark to jump with a 1/4 inch gap

ok thanksdo you think it could be the alternator?
Automotive Expert
noI don't think it's the alt. as the battery is strong, if it was weak and would not turn the starter then maybe, but no I think it has something to do with the ignition, system which they used more than one so, here are some simple things to check, after that it may be something a mechanic should look at.

ok - thank youonce i get it started it runs fine for the rest of the day but the next morning its not easy to startwhen i say the battery is fine - i don't know if it is being chargedbut it does turn over the engine strongly
Automotive Expert
so that is likelythe alt. is good, if it was not then you would need to jump it off.

ok - i'll keep trying thanks for your help

So from what I heard from your discription it is most likely something to do with fire to the spark plugs.
