Q: Car is easy to put in gear, but won't move. It can be pushed so no wheel or break lockage. Transmission fluid is very dark

asked by on October 01, 2016

Was wondering if it's transmission or just needs to be flushed?

My car has 220000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there, thanks for writing in. Odds are high that the transmission has failed. "Dark" fluid indicated a lot of clutch pack material has worn. Also, this can cause the pump to fail inside the transmission. Flushing the fluid at this point will not do any good. I recommend having a transmission specialist inspect this issue for you.

Hello, this sounds like a problem with the governor, perhaps the governor spring to be specific. If the spring breaks, it will not allow the 1-2 shift. The fluid leak (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/oil-fluid-leak-inspection) is likely not a big deal on its own...

If the thermostat housing is leaking after you replaced the thermostat then you either did not seat the thermostat correctly or the housing is cracked. Remove the housing to check for cracks.
