My 2005 Corolla will only start by jump. Afr Mechanic's Assistant: Will the headlights turn on? Is the battery fully charged? Yes, headlights, dash, and interior all come on. Turn th key, nothing happens. Battery is 5 yrs old, 12.3 volts with my volt meter. Had it. Had it check at Auto store, it's good. It's not the starter because it will start when jumped. Had the alternator tested also it's good. After jump start, let it idle (900l several minutes. I turn the headlights on, blower on high, rear defroster on, each time the engine rpm drops a tiny bit. Then I put in gear and drive . At stop, the rpm bottoms out and stalls. Turn the key, nothing happens. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Corolla yourself? What have you tried so far? Yes, 8m trying to fix it. I'm assuming there's an issue withe the alternator wiring harness or the contacts. Not enough current is getting to the is being received which h causes it to stall after several minutes? Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Not that I can think of right now

Hi, my name is\*\*\*\*\* to justanswer. Lets see if we cant get you rolling again. So, it sounds like you have alot of the bases covered here. Have you tested your alternator output with your volt meter while revving the engine to 2000RPMs? **\*\*. During this conversation you will be given an automated offer for a phone call from justanswer, not me. You may accept or decline that offer. I don’t personally offer this service so if you take this another tech may call. Thank you\*\***

I haven't tested the alternator output. When I had it tested, a few months ago, (when this problem first started) I was told it's fine. Then the car ran fine for a couple months until 2 weeks ago when the same problem..

All these tests were done two months ago?

I tested the battery today with voltmeter, 12.3v.
Automotive Expert
I would definitely check alternator output with your volt meter. It should read 13.8v or higher while revving engine. Although your battery is testing 12.3v it is at the end of its life span. Usually 4-6 years is an average life of a battery.

I'll test the output tomorrow. I'm not able to now. Thanks for your help
Automotive Expert
Okay, sounds good. Thanks for using justanswer, and good luck!

I did the output voltage test on the alternator, it stayed right around 14.2No thanks
Automotive Expert
Have you been able to check for any trouble codes?

I haven't checked.
Automotive Expert
From the way you are explaining, it sounds like everything in the charging system is checking out. Now, you say it will start with jumper cables. Will it not crank at all before connecting the cables?

Correct. Will not crank. Jump start, runs several minutes, then slowly loses rpm, headlights dim, dash lights flicker then dies. Won't crank without jump. Only think I can think of is wiring issues from alternator to somewhere.
Automotive Expert
It is possible. I assume you have double checked your connector and battery cable at the back of the alternator?

They're all connected properly.
Automotive Expert
No signs of excessive corrosion?

On the battery, yes. I cleaned both terminals awhile back. And the connections as best I could
Automotive Expert
How about the battery connection at the alternator. Have you checked that for 12v? Not the connector, but the small cable that connects with a nut.

No I haven't checked that connection
Automotive Expert
That cable goes directly to your battery. Should have 12v.

Im on the road. I'll check tomorrow. Anything else I should check?
Automotive Expert
That is unfortunately all I can think of right now. You have done a great job of diagnosing it already. Just make sure your ground connection from the battery to the chassis is good and clean and tight.

Okay. Thanks for your help!
Automotive Expert
You are welcome. Happy Holidays.

The engine loses power after accident, warning lights on
The engine computer will need to be tested (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/check-engine-light-is-on-inspection) to see the codes received. There is a problem in the system that is causing the computer to go into failure mode and limit the throttle opening. Considering the fact that...
