Hi! 2017 [Corolla](/topics-corolla/) SE, car will crank longer than usual after being driven and parked for a few hours. However it will start immediately on the mornings, when it’s cold or when it has just been turned off a couple minutes before hand. I’ve realized it takes a bit longer to start when the car has been sitting for a longer period but nothing past about 3-4 hours. They ran full diagnostics and checked the battery [starter](/topics-starter-toyota/) and [alternators](/topics-alternator-toyota/) and they couldn’t find replicate nor find the problem Mechanic's Assistant: Does the battery look like it's leaking? And does it have a strong smell -- like sulfur? No? It’s a pretty new battery and there’s no smell at all, the battery was checked about 4 times already. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Corolla yourself? What have you tried so far? No not myself but service center from where we brought the car. Haven’t tried anything myself since they insist they can’t find the problem but they ran a full diagnostic, said they verified the starter and the alternator and that verified the cables on the battery and there wasn’t anything wrong with them. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? No thanks

So we have just a problem with hot restarts but when cooled down will start easier. Greg

idk if it's hot I know it's when the car is sitting after a few hours but not immediately after turning it off. it's not like crazy hot (FL) but if the car is cold it definitely starts just fine
Automotive Expert
Okay, You need to get the shop to hook up a scope to the crankshaft sensor when you have the hard start issue, this will confirm if the sensor is shorting out when hot? this is in fact a very common issue. My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you need more help, please let me know so l can continue to assist you. Simply reply back if you require additional information and I will be happy to help with any follow up questions. I am not done until you are happy. Kindest regards Greg

The thing is it only happens after a while and I can't never replicate immediately after turning it off so do I just wait?

Okay, when it happens to you again when cranking the [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) do so for 10 seconds and check the Tachometer (RPM) if it does not move or it's jumpy replace the crankshaft sensor? even better if you have a scan tool with engine speed live reading would be more accurate. Greg

Good to go will definitely try that thanks

Need anything regarding this issue you are free to get back to me if needed. Have a great weekend. Greg

Thanks! You too!Question? By jumpy you mean it just jumps up then stops at a number then jumps higher then stops them does it again? Or you mean it jumps high then back down to zero then again high?

You're welcome. Greg

Sounds like you might have lost your serpentine belt. On most older cars, these were several belts that ran the different engine accessories. On your car, there is only one belt, it is called a serpentine belt, that runs all...
