Q: Loss of power in acceleration

asked by on February 26, 2017

My 1995 grand Cherokee jeep has some trouble moving, I can press the gas pedal pretty far down and the acceleration isn't what it should be- it's way too slow and hesitant. I've got a couple things in mind what it could be, but I want other opinions. I've already done small things like clean out the throttle body and IAC valve, scrape the corrosion off the battery terminals. That made it alittle more responsive but clearly it's still an issue..

Any input is helpful. Thanks!

My car has 177500 miles.

What others are asking

Popping sound when braking and turning.
It's difficult to say for sure without hearing the noise firsthand, but it sounds like you may have a bad CV axle. The CV axle transmits power from the transmission to the wheels, while following the up and down motions...
How do I turn on the side view mirror defrosters?
The side view mirror defrosters increase your visibility by eliminating condensation from the side view mirrors. The side view mirror defrosters will automatically turn on when the rear window defroster is turned on by pressing the Rear Window Defroster button....
Trouble With My reverse gear
You should put the vehicle in park and check to make sure the fluid is full (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-often-do-i-need-to-replace-the-transmission-fluid) first. If it is full, then you may have a bad reverse control band or servo in the transmission, and it would need...
location of knock sensors
The knock sensors are on opposite sides of the engine. Bank 1 is just above the oil drain plug, on the engine block, at the front of the engine. Bank 2 is on the back side of the engine, in...
I have checked the oil level and the oil level on the dipstick is far over 'maximum'. Should I carry out a full service?
You should find out the reason the oil is overfull. If the oil is contaminated with water then you may have a head gasket blown. If the oil is contaminated with fuel then you may have a fuel injection system...
Looking at buying new rims, different centre bores and offsets.
Hi there. You can change the rims (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/3-essential-things-to-know-about-your-car-s-rims) on the vehicle and the 5mm offset difference will not make much difference with the mounting and clearance with anything. Keep in mind, when changing a wheel (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-remove-the-wheels-from-your-vehicle-by-robert-tomashek) from 40mm offset to...
Cranks fine but wont start
There is quite a large number of possible issues that will cause a no start condition (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-not-starting-inspection). There could be a bad fuel pump, bad spark plugs, faulty ignition coil, or a failed camshaft, or crankshaft, sensor. Any of which...
Hi im looking into a used infiniti, the owner gave me the description below, how much would all of the cost me and is it worth it?
Hello, thank you for writing in. It is nearly impossible to tell what kind of costs you are looking at with this old of a vehicle. 220,000 miles is a lot, but it sounds as if the car was maintained...
Just changed my o2 sensor and my engine is still jerking while idling, and jolting while driving, what now?
You may be having a vacuum leak or another problem that is causing the O2 sensor to measure a lean condition. This would account for the rough running engine at idle. Have engine checked for a vacuum leak or leaks...
