I have a 2014 Kia Forte with the 1.8 liter and automatic. The last week it has started intermittently sputtering and stalling at idle. I cannot identify any pattern. There is no check engine light, and the car sometimes restarts easily and others I need to hold the pedal about halfway down to get it to start. There was a little under 1/4 tank of fuel the first time it did it, after I filled it and added isoheet it didnt repeat until I got to about 1/4 tank again last night. I filled up and it has repeated multiple times today. Mechanic's Assistant: Does the light stay on, or does it blink? The engine light only comes on when the car stops running. It goes out as soon as I restart. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Forte yourself? What have you tried so far? I am hoping to fix it myself. So far, I have only tried adding Heet when I filled up as it seemed like possibly bad gas. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? The car has roughly 119000 miles.

Ok, what would you like to know?My name us Larry
Automotive Expert
Thank you Larry. Is the check engine light on? Are there any codes in the computer?

There is no check engine light on, I have not taken it to be hooked up as I did not think there would be a code stored without a check engine light on.
Automotive Expert
Thank you. The check engine light comes on for a emission purposes only. Just because the lights not on doesn't mean there are no codes stored in the computer. Based on my experience the most likely possible causes for this intermittent sputtering installing condition would be a faulty camshaft position sensor, crankshaft position sensor or the oil control valve for the variable valve timing system.

Thank you. I did not know that about the codes. On this car do I have to use a code readercto access the codes, or is there a way to get the car to display them?
Automotive Expert
I do not know of any way to access the codes in the computer without a scan tool. If memory serves me correct this could be done on some early 90 vehicles. But not today's vehicles. (maybe some jeeps) but not this vehicle.

Ok, my 03 pt cruiser you could, but I didnt know if that was common or just a weird Chrysler thing .
Automotive Expert
YES some other chryslers can. Here are the locations of the oil control valves on your vehicle. There are two of them. [https://www.dropbox.com/s/plvguckekhf1zjw/oil%20control%20valve1.pdf?dl=0](https://www.dropbox.com/s/plvguckekhf1zjw/oil%20control%20valve1.pdf?dl=0) [https://www.dropbox.com/s/plvguckekhf1zjw/oil%20control%20valve1.pdf?dl=0](https://www.dropbox.com/s/plvguckekhf1zjw/oil%20control%20valve1.pdf?dl=0)

The links both show control valve 1. It would be nice if that were the one since it is right out in the open!
Automotive Expert
Sorry, try this one. [https://www.dropbox.com/s/5t4s4dougoe50zb/oil%20control%20valve2.pdf?dl=0](https://www.dropbox.com/s/5t4s4dougoe50zb/oil%20control%20valve2.pdf?dl=0)

That is better. Thanks

Thank again. You have a great evening as well.

I took my Kia to the local auto parts store and used their code reader. It showed no codes stored. At this point, I am not sure what to check, as I don't want to just start replacing parts and hoping I picked the right one. What is the most likely cause?
Automotive Expert
I would recommend to check the components I mentioned above.

Ok. So then it is jusy trial and error at this point.
Automotive Expert
No. You diagnose the problem so you are not simply replacing parts. :)

True. Thanks for the info. We are in the process of diagnosing it now.
Automotive Expert
You're welcome!

Hello. If the engine seems to lack power than that can be caused by a number of things. Most of the time this is caused by a weak fuel pump or a failing catalytic converter. As for the headlamp the...
My Jaguar XJ8 is running extremely rough
Being that your car is running better with the MAF disconnected, I say replace your MAF (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/mass-airflow-sensor-replacement). Most cars would shut off without the MAF connected. If you need a technician to scope out the problem in person, a certified...
I am leaking all of my coolant near the rear passenger side tire. What could be the exact cause and how much to fix?
Hey there. This vehicle has a dual A/C and heat system. This means you has a complete A/C heat system mounted in the rear of the vehicle inside the passenger side. The rear system has A/C lines and heater hoses...
If I change spark plugs and wires do I change the rotor and distributor cap also?
It is recommended to replace distributor cap and rotor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/distributor-rotor-and-cap-replacement) at the same time you are having the spark plugs and spark plug wires replaced. The cap and rotor contacts will wear down just like the spark plug electrodes wear...

My car has no oil, the only oil I have available at the moment is 5w-30 but my car requires 5w-20 is it ok if I put it in? Will it
5W-30 is perfectly OK to use on this vehicle on a temporary basis. The only detriment, and it will be hard to detect without complex measuring equipment, is the higher viscosity 5W-30 technically creates "pumping losses" in the engine which...
