No thanks
Automotive Expert
Ignore the automatic phone call prompt.

I went auto zone and used their loan a tool
Automotive Expert
Ok and no codes came up?

It wouldn't even turn on and the man didn't say much but that it might be an electrical problem. I even swapped with another one to make sure it wasn't there machine
Automotive Expert
Ok are any other lights on besides the check engine light?

No sir
Automotive Expert
Is there anything noticeably wrong with the vehicle besides the lights seem dim sometimes?

No I use it for my daily commute
Automotive Expert
Ok. When you say the lights seem dim...do you notice them randomly become dim or flicker?

Yeah and sometime it seems brighter than other times.
Automotive Expert
Thank you for that information. Give me a few minutes to check my Honda site to see if there are any known issues, recalls, etc.

Ok
Automotive Expert
You possibly have two issues going on here. The dim/bright lights could be an issue with the alternator. This will not set the check engine light. The check engine light is on due to a [transmission](/topics-transmission-honda/) issue. The Auto Zone or Advanced Auto scanners do not read transmission codes. You would need to go to a Honda dealer or a quality repair shop that has a scan tool which can scan the transmission.

is this going to be something that costs me alot?
Automotive Expert
Honestly, it is hard to say. Without knowing the codes, I can't tell you exactly what the issue or the cost but my guess from years of experience is $800-$900.

Ok so I should take it to a mechanic soon right to have them check the engine lightWhat alternator is the best for my car?
Automotive Expert
Yes, I would. If the check engine light starts flashing, don't drive it as that is a more serious issue.
Automotive Expert
A Honda alternator is best. If you have any other questions or concerns regarding this issue, please don't hesitate to reach out by hitting the "Reply" button below. Thanks for choosing Just Answer and be well

Ok thank you!!
Automotive Expert
You're very welcome!
