Hi Chris! My car won't turn over when I try to start it Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the battery, particularly the terminal connections? Are they corroded? I'm currently trying to check Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? It's a 2002 Ford Escape Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Escape yourself? What have you tried so far? I just opened the hood, and there's no corrosion on the battery. I haven't done anything yet myself Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? No, I think that's it

Okay, so what happens when you turn the key? Any noise from [engine](/topics-engine-ford/)?

All I get is a clicking, but no noise
Automotive Expert
Single clicking noise? Can you tell me where the noise is coming from?

I'm not sure, but it's not from the engine. I can't turn on my radio, and the dashboard doesn't light upWhat does stay on are the oil and check engine lightsIt clicks as long as I'm turning the key, but it won't turn over
Automotive Expert
Okay, give me a moment to review the wiring diagrams. Can you please confirm your engine size?

It says it's a V6 24 valve
Automotive Expert
Okay, this sounds like we may have a discharged battery. what testing equipment do you have access to?

I don't really have equipment to test
Automotive Expert
Okay, do you have jumper cables?

Unfortunately, no
Automotive Expert
Okay, so our options are limited. With the lack of lights and radio my initial thought would be to test or jump the battery. This is where we need to begin and has a high likelihood of resolving your issue. But if a charged, jump started battery still does not start the engine we either have a power issue or a starting circuit issue. This will require a multi-meter to be able to perform the tests we need to. You can purchase a multi-meter at any auto parts store or WalMart for under $20. . Follow the steps below for the initial diagnostic: 1. Check all fuses related to the starting circuit. Fuse #19 in the battery junction box and fuse #11 in the interior fuse box. 2. Check for 12v at the "S" terminal (small wire) on the [starter](/topics-starter-ford/) with the key in the "START" position. If we don't have 12v then we have an issue with getting signal to the starter. We need to test the starter control circuit. 3. Check for battery power (B+) at the large battery wire on the starter. If we don't have 12v then repair the battery cable between the starter and the battery. 4. Check for ground on the case of the starter. If we don't have ground, then repair the engine ground circuit . If tests 1-4 are good and the vehicle still will not start then we have a bad starter. Let me know what you find . We will be using a multi-meter to perform these tests. If you are not familiar with how to use a multi-meter then follow the link below to watch a video about multi-meter basics: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2LgvmWNVwc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2LgvmWNVwc) . If you don't feel comfortable with these tests the best option would be to have it towed. But I would suggest that if you have AAA or roadside assistance through your auto insurance (most people do and don't know it) they will come out and jump start your engine for free. . I’m glad that I was able to answer your question today. My goal is to ensure you receive a 5 STAR experience. I called roadside assistance, so we should be good
Automotive Expert
Sounds good. When they get there if they cannot get it started and you need further assistance please let me know.

It started just fine! I'm letting it run right now

Perfect, glad to hear it
