Q: Ford bronco temps won't regulate thermostat isn't working properly ...flushed with no change. How much too replace?

asked by on

Radiator has been flushed temps fluctuate thermostat is not working properly either. How much to replace these parts it als vibrates at low speeds. What may be the cause of this outside of alignment? Car is from the north now in Florida they are asking $3900 OBO

If the car were in good condition, it might be worth around $2,700. Used cars are a dime a dozen at the moment. Inasmuch as the car is not in good condition, you have to subtract from your offer the cost of the required repairs, but unfortunately that cost is UNKNOWN because you do not have in hand a diagnostic of the cooling issue or the source of the vibration. The cost to replace the thermostat is not particularly high but that’s not the problem. The problem is, once the thermostat is replaced, what if that does not resolve the overheating and thus you have additional repair costs? With regard to the vibration, if it’s due to a lot of loose suspension parts, you are easily looking at hundreds of dollars in parts alone. Based on JUST the two issues you are describing, combined with the ACTUAL transaction values for this year make and model, I wouldn’t offer a penny over $2,000 and frankly that offer may be too generous. In fact, the seller may leap at that offer simply because there are probably no other takers at $3,900.

Inasmuch as used car repair, maintenance, and restoration costs are highly dependent on the actual, as found, condition of the vehicle, the only way to get a reasonably precise estimate of costs you might face, and also to protect yourself in the transaction, is to request a pre-purchase vehicle inspection. That inspection, carried out by a certified Mechanic, dispatched to your location, will give you the exact data that you need to make a fully informed, intelligent decision and minimize your risk in buying a used car. If you look at the just cited link for YourMechanic’s inspection service, you will see a long list of the vehicle systems that must be inspected as well as details of YourMechanic’s inspection methodology. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to re-contact YourMechanic as we are always here to help you.
