I have a 97 Ford f150 it won't go into third gear it acts like it goes into neutral when I'm driving what would cause that Mechanic's Assistant: How old is the [transmission](/topics-transmission-ford/)? Have you checked the [brake](/topics-brake-ford/) switch? From 97 where is the brake switch located at Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your F150 yourself? What have you tried so far? I changed the shift solenoids I changed the check ball valves

Hi, my name is Jay The transmission uses high pressure to actuate internal clutches and when a solenoid is actuated it directs high pressure fluid to the clutch packs and if there are internal leaking seals the clutch will not completely lock up and will cause slipping like you are getting feeling like it just went to neutral. I would try to put transmission conditioner in your transmission and drive for a couple hundred miles to see if shifting improves. If not then will need to have transmission rebuilt. I am here to answer any questions you may have on your transmission issue. Let me know if still need assistance?

Yeah it's only doing it when it's supposed to go in third gearWould that do in every gear or just thirdthis a question someone told me it could be the throttle positioning sensor what's not making it come at a second gear into third is that true
Automotive Expert
Only when going into 3rd gear would be the final drive clutch pack problem inside transmission. There are 3 clutch packs and cover each gear and OD is done by torque convertor. You can try the transmission conditioner first and if not work then will need overhaul of transmission.

Okay, thanks

You are very welcome.

more than likely it has to be rebuilt
Automotive Expert
Yes most likely.

The car cannot be put in gear when the engine runs
Hello. It sounds like the clutch slave cylinder (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-clutch-slave-cylinder) may not be working properly or has completely failed. The slave cylinder is what makes it easy for you to manually shift through the gears of the car. When the slave...

How often should you flush fluids (power steering, coolant, transmission)...shop says every 2 years? 2007 Honda Odyssey
Hi there - in general, YES, most industry experts recommend changing engine coolant, power steering fluid and brake fluid on 2 year intervals (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/all-about-car-service-indicator-lights-by-brady-klopfer). Changing transmission fluid (and filter) can get into a "religious" discussion. Many vehicles today are delivered...
