Hi Shirley, it's nice to meet you.
Usually a misfire is the result of bad plugs, plug wires and possibly an ignition coil.
This is where I would start, especially if you are feeling it under load. If the check engine light is on it may tell you which cylinder is misfiring, then I would focus on that cylinder. If you don't have a code reader, most parts stores will check the codes for free for you.

The engine light has been on for a while but we tried to do the code reader but for some reason my truck won't connect to one so we aren't able to read the codesWe know it needs spark plugs and wires but we are unable to do so until Monday

That's ok I would still proceed with a tune up without a problem.
If the condition isn't fixed with the plugs and wires, then you likely need a coil.
I would try a different code reader or a parts store to see if you can get it working.

Well, if it's misfiring that's going to cause issues trying to pick up speed. It's possible there is something going on with the transmission but I would not start with it.

It cranks up but makes a whining noise after it starts up, but here lately it's been skipping a littleToday it just got worse could it be the spark plugs and wires cause they haven't been changed since I bought the truckThey are wore out

A whining sound could be any pulley on the engine. Remove the drive belt and start it. If the whining is still in there, then it's not the pulleys, if it's gone, then its one of the pulleys, if you spin them you can probably tell which one.
If it's running worse it's very possible.

I was driving the truck down the interstate and as I had my foot on the gas pedal it didn't have any power I had it all the way to the floor and it wasn't acceleratingI pulled over then it started to accelerate again as I continued to push the gas pedal

Well it seems to me if you haven't been able to do the suggested repairs, it's going to have the same issue.
Running the air does add a load to the engine, but without doing the fix, we can't really expect anything different.
Since the engine didn't race, that really points to an engine issue.
