Have you had the opportunity to do any visual checks around the engine? Checked oil level, anti freeze, etc? Does this knocking noise speed up and slow down with throttle response?

You said the check engine light came on. An electronic scanner would be used to retrieve codes from the vehicles computer to help diagnose the problem.

I would also check and see how much motor oil is in the engine.
To me it sounds like the motor had an internal failure and is not operable.

If it is something like crankshaft bearing failure or piston and connecting rod failure, yes, it would usually require an engine replacement.
