Q: 1998 Ford Expedition - when I open just the driver side front door the dome light flickers on and off -- why?

asked by on April 12, 2017

Ever since I have had my vehicle, the dome lights blink on and off, accompanined by a clicking noise, when I open the front driver's-side door only, then stop blinking when one of the other three doors are opened. Nobody has ever been able to tell me why. Otherwise, all features work fine. Suggestions?

My car has 272000 miles.

The switch in the door frame is probably not making good contact. That is fairly easy to test just by bypassing the switch. If that is not the issue, a simple trace of the dome light circuit will reveal the fault. Obviously, somewhere in the circuit, there is a point where there is intermittent contact. I would first start by testing the switch in the door frame though. Chevy 5.3l - Lost oil pressure, why?

My truck is shaking. The transmission is causing it.
This may be a sign of low transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service) or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car's computer activates a...

Check engine light and the engine is making a humming noise.
The humming noise (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-making-a-noise-inspection) could be the air filter being dirty, the drive belt slipping, or the air conditioning clutch is slipping. It is safe to drive your vehicle to the appointment as long as there is no smells or...
How can you check to see if one or more engine mounts are faulty? 2009 Honda Fit
Hi there - to detect a failed motor/transmission mount (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-engine-mount), a technician may use a jack or large pry bar to attempt to lift or move the engine/transmission to determine loose motion - indicating a failed mount. Some motor mounts...

Hello, thank you for writing in. While it is not terribly uncommon to run transmission fluid in the power steering system (they are both hydraulic fluids), newer vehicles tend to be designed to be used with specific fluids, and do...
