How to Register a Car in New Jersey

Making sure that your car is registered when moving to the state of New Jersey is very important. While there are a number of other things that you will have to worry about during the moving process, the registering of your car should take precedent. After moving to New Jersey, you will have 60 days to get your car registered before you are in danger of being fined for being late. You will need to go to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission in person in order to get the car registration process done. Here are some of the things you will have to bring in with you to get this process done. You will need to:

  • Have proof of insurance
  • Present your Social Security number
  • Show a copy of your driver’s license
  • Provide the vehicle’s odometer reading
  • Complete an Application of Registration

When purchasing a car from a New Jersey dealership, then you will be able to have the registration process done for you. Be sure to get a copy of the paperwork so you can easily get a tag.

If you buy a vehicle from an individual, then you will need to get in and get it registered, When going in to register the vehicle, here are some of the things that you will need:

  • The title to the vehicle
  • Proof of insurance
  • Your Social Security number
  • Your New Jersey issued driver’s license
  • The odometer reading from the car
  • An application of registration

The amount of money that you will have to pay to get a vehicle registered will be based on the age and the weight of the car.
