How to Renew Your Car Registration in Maryland

In order to keep the roads of Maryland safe and drivable, there will have to be taxes that need to paid by citizens. Among the most common taxes that a person will have to pay is to get their car registered with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. Every two years you will have to renew this registration. When the time comes to do this, you will get a notice in the mail about 30 days before your current registration expires. Here is what you will find on this notice:

  • The fee that you have to pay
  • The deadline that you need to have it paid by
  • The emissions check requirements
  • Things you will need to complete the process

Using the internet to renew

If you are unable to go in person to renew your registration, then you will be able to take advantage of the online option. Here is what you will need to do:

  • Get the car’s title number handy
  • Get the license plate number
  • Pay the fee that is provided

Going in person

If you would rather go in person to get this process handled, then you will need to make your way to the county treasurer’s office. Be sure to bring in the following items:

  • The emissions test certificate
  • The notice that you have received in the mail
  • Proof that you have car insurance
  • The money to pay the fee that you owe

Renew by mail

If you want to renew the registration on a car by mail, you will need to do the following:

  • If you have any changes in address be sure to enter them
  • Make sure the car insurance information is correct
  • Submit payment in the form of a check or money order

The address that you will need to send this information to will be on the notice that you receive.

The renewal fees

Here are a list of the renewal fees you may have to pay:

  • A passenger car that is up to 3,700 lbs. will cost you $135
  • If the car is over 3,700 lbs., you will need to pay $187

The emissions testing
