Q: what could be causing my car to overheat...did I fry the engine?

The car overheated and person continued to drive until it shutoff I took it to a mechanic because it would no longer start and he replaced the expansion tank and coolant reservoir car started back up but shortly began to overheat again?
My car has an automatic transmission.
