Q: Oil pressure light comes on when stopped

asked by on December 01, 2017

So I did an oil change on it 1000 miles ago and it was doing fine ran good and every thing for the last 3 days any time it is stopped (in any gear park reverse drive neutral) oil pressure light comes on but as soon as you put a load on the engine it goes out I'm thinking oil pressure sensor oil pump or main bearing but I don't know

My car has 225000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi Matt. Thanks for contacting us today. I would agree with your assessment of a faulty oil pump or even a faulty sensor. The damaged main bearing would likely cause consistent oil pressure issues, so I think you can rule that out. If the oil light illuminated, it likely triggered and stored an OBD-II trouble code. I would start by having a professional mechanic complete an oil light inspection, so they can download these codes and determine what is causing this problem.

Timing chain tensioner rattling on a 2003 Audi A4
Yes it does, but it should never rattle of course. The problem with yours is that the timing chain probably needs to be replaced because it has too much slack there or in the tensioner. Changing the timing chain is...
engine cranks will not fire, why?
My best guess would be the crankshaft position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-crankshaft-position-sensor). I have seen this part fail before without setting a code. It is located on the left side of the engine block, (front of car). It is near the exhaust...

Misfiring (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-can-problems-with-the-ignition-system-cause-misfiring_2) on one or more cylinders can cause a rough running or backfiring condition. Misfires can be caused by lack of spark or lack of fuel to any cylinder. Lack of spark can be due to a bad spark...
What kind of modification/performance can I do to my car?
Hello - the best way to keep your Altima running like new is "attentive maintenance (https://www.yourmechanic.com/scheduled-maintenance/nissan-altima/?year=2009&mileage=150000)". Keep fluids (oil, transmission fluid, coolant) topped off and changed at recommended intervals. If your timing chain and associated components (tensioner, idler, chain guides,...
Steering rack problem 2005 Audi A5
Hi there - yes, the "D" unit is an updated steering rack (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-steering-rack-gearbox) ("F" updated models are already available, so the updates continue). However, remember that this is electrically power-assisted, and there is a software component to the equation. If...
