Hi! My name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I will be able to assist you. I’m sorry that you’re having trouble with your vehicle. Don’t worry though, we’ll be able to figure this out. Thank you for taking the time to let us help you out with this problem and hopefully we can sort it out quickly. Please understand that I do not know your knowledge or capabilities so I may need to ask questions to find out basic information to help solve your specific problem. Sometimes it may take a moment for me to respond because I may have to look up information about your concern. I appreciate your patience and will provide responses as soon as possible. If the key is in good shape, then your locked steering wheel is most likely the problem because if the steering wheel is locked, it will not allow the key to turn. You will need to turn the steering wheel to one direction and hold it there (it may be tough). While holding the wheel, try to turn the key. If it doesn't turn, then you will need to slowly allow the steering wheel to come back while trying to turn the key. If that doesn't work, then do the same thing but turn the wheel in the other direction. This should allow you to turn the key and unlock the steering wheel. If this does not work, then you may have a problem with the ignition lock cylinder and it will have to be replaced. My goal is to give you the best service possible and to help you. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to let me know. If I’m not online at the time, I will respond ASAP when I get back.

Thank you! But the key is turning, but the steering wheel isn't moving at all. I've turned the car on but the steering wheel isn't steering. The battery is low as wellThe car battery

You're very welcome. Ok then the steering lock must be faulty but if the battery is low then that will cause all kinds of electrical problems. I would have the battery recharged and then see if the problem goes away.

Service advancetrac, low battery features temporarily turned off & steering assist fault service required is showing up on my dashboardI can can turn the steering wheel with a lot pressure but it won't steer automatically
Automotive Expert
Ok then the [power steering](/topics-power-steering/) is not working because of the low voltage. Since it's electronic steering, it will require full battery voltage. What is the voltage on the battery with the [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) running?

The car started but the problem with the steering wheel occurred after the car started

There are also 2 fuses you'll need to check. F6 in the high current fuse box on the battery and F19 in the under hood fuse box. If they are good and the battery has a good charge, then you'll need to use a scan tool to check for trouble codes.

All kinds of warning lights are coming on & I don't know where to find the voltage on the the battery. What does low battery features temporarily turned off mean?
Automotive Expert
If the voltage is low then it will shut down almost all the extra systems to conserve power. You'll need a voltmeter to check the voltage on the battery.

I don't have a voltmeterHow do I check the voltage?m on the battery? How do I check the voltage on the battery?
Automotive Expert
Ok if you don't have a voltmeter then you'll have to find someone that has one. That's the only way to check the voltage.

Is there anything else I can do to try and solve this problem?
Automotive Expert
Just check the fuses I gave you earlier but you'll need to get a voltmeter to continue testing.

My car was towed the other day, could that be the cause of my steering wheel being locked?
Automotive Expert
Yes it's possible. They may have damaged it.

They towed my car a few days ago, I drove it out of town & this problem just occurred. I’m just trying to figure out why this is happening now and not a few days ago when I picked up the car after it was towed.
Automotive Expert
Oh ok then it may not be related. You can check the electrical connector on the steering motor to make sure it has a good connection.

Okay, can you tell me where the electrical connector located and how do I check the connection?
Automotive Expert
It's on the steering gear on the passenger side. You'll have to jack the car up off the ground to get to them.
