Usually its the gas tank fill receptacle that fails, what you would want to do is scan for codes first, and then more than likley smoke test the system to confirm the fill is the fault.

a smoke test a something only a shop can do, unless you want to invest in the tool your self which start at a few hundred dollars.
and no you would need to change the receptacle to correct the issue if it is the problem .
