Hi. I went to put my car into first gear today and was too quick and the gear was only half in when I released the clutch. It made a brief grind and popped back into neutral with a clunk/bang. It drives perfectly and first shifts without a problem. Will I have damaged the gear box? It is a VW golf MK 7. I hear that they are very tough gear boxes. Thank you for your help . Mechanic's Assistant: Has the clutch been slipping? Are you having any trouble shifting? No, it is a brand new clutch and gearbox fitted a week ago. It was operator error not a mechanical issue. just concerned that I might have damaged it. Drives and shifts perfectly like nothing happened. Mechanic's Assistant: What year is your Golf? 2014 1.4 petrol Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Golf yourself? What have you tried so far? No. I had a VW specialist fit the gearbox and clutch. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Just if I might have caused damage to my gearbox. Only happened once.

Hello and thank you for using Just Answer my name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I will be glad to help. Those gear boxes are tough and people miss shifts all the time. While it is not good for your gear box it probably didn't cause in major damage. The only way to know for sure would be to do a complete tear down but if it is shifting fine and not slipping out of gear that seems like an unnecessary expense

Hi Brian. Yes, I have been told that they are tough. I bought the car secondhand with only 50k KMs on it and the VW specialist said he had never ever seen a MK 7 gearbox need replacing. Previous owner obviously could not drive a manual. It was not so much missing a shift so much. I was at the lights and the car had stopped because I had taken my foot off the clutch. The lights changed and I was slow to react and had cars behind me. I quickly stepped on the clutch to start it and slipped into first but as I was in a hurry to get moving I declutched as the shifter just nudged into gear and it ground for the briefest second and popped back into neutral with a bang. I re-engaged the clutch and it went into gear perfectly. I have driven it and it slips nicely into first even when rolling at walking pace. No sounds or vibration coming from the gear box in first or any other gears. So you think it will be ok? Just concerned because I spent 5k replacing clutch and gearbox.

I think you should be fine. People do that occasionally at high RPMS and the gear box usually survives. This low RPM situation should be ok

Thank you mate. You put my mind at ease. My heart sunk when it happened after spending so much just a week ago on a new one. Have a great day. Cheers.

You're welcome, I have seen lots of clutches damaged but that gear box is strong! Have a nice day

I had no idea that missing a shift can damage the clutch. That is brand new as well. As with the gearbox, appears to be unchanged and operates perfectly so I assume that it is ok too. Agreed, tough car all around. Add a stage one remap from Germany and an Idrive throttle controller for the throttle lag and it is a different car. More like the 2 Lt TDI but better.

Sounds like a great car, have fun with it!
