I have a 1991 toyota [corolla](/topics-corolla/), it has an automatic transmission. The transmission shifts into all gears with little play in the shifter. Does not have any forward motion, bit reverse works just fine. Checked the transmission fluid and it IS dark, so needs a change but is that all? Or should I check anything else for a potential transmission issue? Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the Toyota? Is it the original transmission? 125,000ish miles not sure if it's the original or not Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Corolla yourself? What have you tried so far? I will likely be fixing it myself. Looks like the fluid is dark and in need of change and it is missing a belt but I don't think that will effect the transmission. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Not that I think of

Good afternoon Yes, I would change the fluid and filter and see if it helps. From the fluid being dark, the forward clutch may have failed in the transmission not allowing t to move forward. It sounds like you will be replacing the transmission. Roy

How difficult would it be to check and/or change the forward clutch in an automatic? I've done some clutch work on manuals but haven't dealt with an automatic before
Automotive Expert
The transmission would have to be removed and disassembled to access the clutches. If you are there, you might as well do all the clutches and seals as well as the torques converter. Basically rebuilding it. If you try it, I suggest getting a manual for following the process. ATSG makes a great manual for all transmissions and is easy to follow. Roy

Thank you very much. But I think that's a bit more work than I can do in my driveway.

You are welcome. I would consider a used transmission. Go www.car-part.com. Roy

Rough idling misfire & a thumping sound from the front of engine
