Q: Timing off from TDC

asked by on February 15, 2016

The timing is off several degrees from the TDC. I think it needs to be adjusted, or the distributor needs to be reinstalled to align it.

Hello. It sounds like a new distributor has been installed and is misaligned, causing the timing to be off. The truck timing needs to be set to TDC, then the distributor needs to be reinstalled, and timing rechecked. This should be done by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.

You will need to do a pressure test on the cooling system to see if there is coolant leaking from the radiator or the head gasket (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-replace-a-head-gasket-by-jerel-lawrence). The other test is to do a compression test on all the cylinders...

It sounds like you may have an evaporative emissions system leak.
