Q: RPMs erratic during idling, Check Engine Light on, P0174 code

asked by on August 31, 2016

The RPMs are fluctuating erratically while the truck idles. It is similar to the AC compressor turning on and off. The dash is showing the check engine light on too. The truck has been getting very low gas mileage, like 13-16 MPG. After having the codes read, the P0174 error code appeared. The repairs done on the truck so far include the replacement of the oxygen sensors, gas cap and MAF. Also, the cleaner was added into the fuel injection system. What is causing this and what does the error code indicate? What kind of repairs are necessary on the truck?

Hello. The P0174 code deals with the truck running lean. That means that the PCM is restricting fuel to the injectors. This is usually caused by a vacuum leak in the engine. There could be a leaking intake gasket, or a broken or disconnected vacuum hose. The may cause the truck to run lean and have an erratic idle. I would recommend that you have the intake and vacuum lines to the car checked for leaks and breaks. Have a certified technician, like one from YourMechanic, diagnose the idling issue and assist you with repair.

Failed smog check - NOX value @ 15 mph too high - max 346, measured 436 (@25mph max 523, meas 411)

Hi there. NOx is produced through heat; which typically occurs when the engines fuel mixture is too lean. Lean fuel mixtures cause high NOx or nitric oxide emissions. A lean fuel condition may be due to a vacuum leak's and/or...

Gauges not working

Hello. If only your tachometer and speedometer aren't working, the problem is probably with the instrument cluster itself. This is because these two gauges use completely different inputs. The speedometer gets its signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), whereas...

The transmission is slipping.

Hi, thanks for writing in. It seems that the clutch disc is most likely worn to the point that the pressure plate cannot fully engage and lock the clutch to the engine. If that is the case, you will need...

My timing belt broke and we retimed and replaced the belt. And it will crank and idle but when u put it in drive it won't go

If there was no loss of power prior to this incident, a possibility is the new timing belt is mispositioned. You can check for that indirectly by measuring intake vacuum at idle. If intake vacuum is below the low end...

Ticking when accelerating but no tick when idle or in neutral revving

It sounds like the ticking you are describing may be the result of an exhaust gasket leak. When the exhaust gasket begins to fail, this may cause this type of ticking sound as the engine RPM's increase. I would suggest...

Hi, thanks for writing in. I'd be happy to help you. Code P2104 relates the throttle position control actuator, and code P2126 relates to the throttle position sensor. When either of these components is not working properly, this can cause...

Had timing chains replaced, check engine light continues to come on

Hello. If the Check Engine Light has come on, I would take the vehicle back to the dealership and have them take care of the issue. As all of your issues only began after their major service, they should be...

My clutch will not work.

Your clutch hydraulic system works very similarly to your brake system. If the clutch pedal is stuck in the down position and cannot be moved up at all then the clutch master cylinder has failed and has seized internally. If...
