Rear axle slipping out

My car has 96798 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. If you have a solid axle housing on the vehicle, then the c-lock on the axle broke causing the axle to come out. If your vehicle has CV Shafts, then the joint to the CV Shaft may have broke off a bearing causing it to plunge inside making the shaft fall out. I recommend seeking out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you diagnose your axle issue.
