Q: Post Overheating- car turns but dies soon after

asked by on July 22, 2017

My wife drove car, noticed car overheating when red light turned on. Turned it off, cooled down after a while drove 3 minutes to better waiting location. She stated the car shook before it died.

Family friends showed up and drove the car 8 miles; the car didnt shake anymore but it was overheating on arrival.

Seems to be a closed stuck thermostat, but when i turn the vehicle on, it turns, but dies shortly thereafter. Sounds like air, or a loose hose of some sort right before it dies, but when i check, doesnt seem to be the case.

My car has 62000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

2004 Nissan Altima- Won't move when the code reads p0420 on the scanner. Did my transmission go? Is it my catalytic converter like code said?
Hi there. The code P0420 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0420-obd-ii-trouble-code-catalyst-system-efficiency-below-threshold-bank-1-by-jamahl-walker) means that the catalytic converter is below threshold and cannot burn off any emissions in the exhaust stream. The O2 sensors have pickup this fault and put the engine into limp mode. As for...
