2000 Nissan xterra Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Xterra yourself? What have you tried so far? Maybe. It started making a loud knocking noise and lost power. I slowly made it home and noticed the timing belt was off. Put it back on and started the car The knocking noise was still occurring. Does that mean my engine is blown or a rod? Mechanic's Assistant: Is the power loss consistent, or does it fluctuate? I only drove it home and it was consistent Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? It is a 3.3 liter engine 165000 miles

Hi! Hope I can help sorry to hear bout your knocking noise have you replaced your timing belt ? let me know Thank you Roy! If you have a internal knock that could be a engine failure

No my belt looked fine I am thinking the tensioner was loose and it came off the puley
Automotive Expert
if that happened you could have major issues

That’s what someone said it sounds like rod knock
Automotive Expert
If you have a rod knocking you will need to replace the engine

Does the belt being off cause that noise
Automotive Expert
it will not make a knocking type noise it will just have a loss of power it can also slap the front cover when loose

I think it is time for a new car
Automotive Expert
It might be from what you have told me at least a new engine

Possibly, I only paid 2500 for it so not sure what to doThank you for your input
Automotive Expert
you can get a used engine that would be less money Or you can junk the car and get another car also it will cost you another 2K dollars to fix the car or put that towards anther car

I will see if anyone wants part or junk it

My car keeps shutting off
Hi there. From the description you have given, the charging system needs to be inspected.
