This morning i went and started my 2006 Nissan Altima 3.5 sl, it was obviously very cold out and I wanted to defrost the windows and warm up the car before going to work..all seemed well. Well i remembered i hadn't turned on the the rear defrost, so i went back outside. Anyways, while I was sitting in the driver's seat ...I heard a loud screeching noise that kept repeating, so I turned the car off..but it wouldn't turn off. Even after i had removed the key. Then popped the hood and there was some smoke, and the smell of something burning/melting. The car sounded like it was trying to crank even though it was still on and running. It finally shut off, and i have unhooked the battery ...as I qas clueless as to what else to do in that moment...any idea on what this could be..or is my car just saying its done with me and wants to break up? Mechanic's Assistant: Is this your first time dealing with this issue? Yes Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Altima yourself? What have you tried so far? Not fixing ot myself.

That sounds like your main fuse panel shorted and was sending signal to the starter, those cars have trouble with those fuse panels, hopefully thats all the problem is if so and nothing else got damaged thats a 300-400 repair. Once you get it in they will know more and if you have any questions after they diagnose it you can always chat with me about it.

At this point am I best to leave the car sit and have it towed to a mechanic? Luckily it is at home so..but my concern is ...you said further damage...

REFUELING VENT VALVE on 2001 ALTIMA, need to drop tank?
Hi there - no, it is not necessary to drop the tank to replace the refueling vent valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-evaporation-vent-solenoid). However, it would be helpful to have the least amount of fuel possible in the fuel tank, simply to minimize spillage...

If the vehicle is presently overheating, you want to check, and perhaps just replace, the cooling system thermostat (thermostats are not costly and they do eventually fail), check the radiator for blockages (radiators can be flow tested) and check the...

Would a leaking exhaust manifold cause a catalytic converter code?
A leaking exhaust will cause excessive oxygen to get into the exhaust and cause the O2 sensors to detect this and will set a code for the leak. I suggest getting leak repaired and then recheck the system to see...
