Q: My car will crank over but won't start. 2000 Ford Taurus

asked by on January 05, 2017

As I was driving my engine light popped on. Then my car started slowing down without me pushing on the break and wouldn't let me go any faster so I pulled over. As soon as I pulled over the car died and antifreeze started coming out of the resivour. My heat gage didn't move the whole time. I tried to start the car back up and it started but then it died right after. I also don't have any heat what so ever even when there is antifreeze in it. We had it towed to my house and we let it sit overnight and tried to start it up the next day and it still wouldn't star . It would crank over but wouldnt start. What could be the problem?

My car has 73000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hello - the first task is to extract whatever problem codes set the Check Engine light. These will guide diagnosis. Check next for a missing or shredded serpentine belt. If this belt failed, the alternator and water pump would no longer have power to turn them. This failure could also have been a fuel supply issue (fuel pump relay or fuel pump failure), ignition (crankshaft position sensor, coils or ignition module). I would recommend an engine stall inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs. It also sounds like you have a "borderline problem" cooling system, which needs some attention as well.

Transmission won't go into gear

As bad as that sounds, it could be as simple as a worn bushing which would cause the cable to come loose from the linkage. It may have also been a broken shifter cable. So the first step would be...

I got my fixed but the car is still overheating and the heat not working and was leaking coolant

The lack of heat being generated by your system may indicate a clogged or leaking heater core. The heater core is a small radiator like unit that circulates the hot coolant from the engine through the heater core which then...

Battery light goes on when I start car then turns off, if I rev engine light comes back until rpms go down. Abs goes comes on/off

Batteries can die due to faults in the charging system so ideally a suspected "faulty" battery should be load tested before a decision is made to condemn it. The only exception to this rule is if the battery is already...

Car not starting after being parked on flooded street

The water may have been high enough to get the starter and wiring wet. I would suggest trying to jump start the vehicle after it has been allowed to dry out for a day or two to see if the...

Burning smell from rear of vehicle

The rear brakes are probably sticking or seized. If the car has rear disc brakes that could be due to faults with the piston in the caliper bore and/or it could be due to the caliper(s) sticking on the torque...

Vehicle stalls both at idle and while moving without triggering any check engine codes.

This is usually caused by a bad connection from a main power source. On your Dakota, this would be a fusible link or fuse coming directly from the battery. The fuses will be in the power distribution center under the...

How do I extend the remote start?

Unless set otherwise, your engine will run for 10 minutes after being turned on via remote start. After 10 minutes, if the car has not been operated, the engine will turn off. You can extend the remote start time at...
