The warning staying on suggests that the charging voltage has dropped to a level where it can no longer maintain the battery voltage. The battery when the engine is running is continuously charged by the alternator. If the output from the alternator drops the battery light comes on. The car needs to be assessed and the charging voltage checked but it sounds very likely that the alternator is starting to fail.

Ok so it's very difficult to say if the alternator is charging just below where it should be it's likely that you could drive a short distance without issue, but if the alternator has stopped charging totally it will lead to a breakdown as the battery discharges.
