I have a 95 Jeep Wrangler 4 cylinder. It has been running awesome until the other day when I put it in reverse. Backed up and depresses the clutch and brake to stop to shift into first and park it. When I hit the brake the engine was definitely under a little load. You could feel it still trying to pull. I could not get it out of reverse. I shut it off and wiggled it for a little and it came right out and ran fine the rest of the night. Now it is happening more often. I’ll start it in first with clutch depressed and it pulls a little. Early tonight I checked the fluid in the transmission and it was full. I started in neutral and I could not get it to go into a gear at all! Shut it off and it would not go into a gear. Let it sit about 5 minutes and it went into a gear and ran fine. Mechanic's Assistant: Has the clutch been slipping? Are you having any trouble shifting? No Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Wrangler yourself? What have you tried so far? Yes, I just bought it about two weeks ago. This issue just started yesterday so today I check the fluid in the transmission which was full. I plan on doing a transmission fluid change soon. Nothing seem to be wet on or around the trans. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Don’t think so

Ok so when the car is not running the gears are all smooth and selectable ?

Some times other times it won’t go into a gear
Automotive Expert
Ok and this is without the engine running only ?

No it's happened 3 times. The not coming out of gear or going in
Automotive Expert
Ok and when this happens it’s all gears ?
Automotive Expert
Ok this sounds more like a clutch clearance issue as opposed to a transmission fault

It has only happened about about 3 times like I said. Two time it was running and wouldn't come out of the gear(different gears). Then yesterday i started it and it would not go into any gear. Let it sit for a couple mins and it was fine. When this issue isn't happening it shifts and run fine

I suspect the clutch pressure plate is starting to fail and this will occur more often . I think if it happens again pumping clutch a few times typically would improve the issue

Alright I will try that
Automotive Expert
Keep me posted

Automotive Expert
Average cost is around $1000

Misfires (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/is-it-safe-to-drive-with-a-misfiring-engine) can be caused by several things. I would first check for vacuum leaks (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/is-it-safe-to-drive-with-a-vacuum-leak), then I would pull the plugs to see if they need replacing. It is possible that have a fuel system concern, but I would...
