Q: Installed a new battery, my car gives no response.

asked by on December 06, 2016

I had a small incident a few months back, hit a bit of degree in the road. Cost me a few tires and a good scare. After replacing the tires and a few weeks after. My car wouldn't accllerate on drive when I shifted out of park. I figured my sensor went out. I couldn't afford the fix at the time so I was using the car shifting from 1 to 2 t 3 and then D. Once the car was in motion it drove fine. Only drove to work and home out of precaution. One night the battery died, was old. So went and bought a new one; but when I put the new battery in the car gave no response. No dash lights, no blinking or sound. The only it does when I try the batter is it sprays the windshield cleaner and eventually starts to smoke out of the alternator like power is going directly to it. What do I do? Whats wrong with electrical?

My car has 117000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

If you have went as far to do compression and leak down, I’ll assume the problem is not obvious. After those tests, you can be almost sure the mechanical components of the engine are good. Is it a random misfire...
hi how long should my brake calipers last?? based on other mercs etc
Brake calipers, associated torque plates and sliding pins should all be thoroughly cleaned and rebuilt every time you have to change the brake pads (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/brake-pads-replacement). These parts are subject to corrosion, brake grit, dust and dirt, and extremely high heat....

Steering tightens up when turning left while moving and there is a rubbing sound from driver's tire at 10-15 MPH.
The noise you mention seems more likely to be a wheel bearing (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/wheel-bearings-replacement) failing - they get quite noisy with higher road speed, and get even noisier while turning (the outer wheel catches more load). It is possible the tire...
battery tested fine, car won't start

Engine stalls when putting car into gear.
There could be an issue with the transmission torque converter or the clutches forward and reverse are coming on at the same time inside the transmission causing the engine to stall out when shifting into gear. I recommend seeking out...
No crank no start. Crankshaft is stuck. Could it be the crankshaft sensor? 2007 Dodge Charger
Hi there - if you are unable to rotate the crankshaft, that is a serious problem. Perhaps the timing chain has broken, and jammed between the crankshaft sprocket and the timing chain cover? Check for problem codes, whether the Check...
Engine stalls in gear at stop light
This can happen for a few different reasons and is usually related to things like the idle control valve or the MAP sensor. I would suggest checking the MAP sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/manifold-absolute-pressure-sensor-map-sensor-replacement) as this would seem to have more impact on...
