From what you describe, and it being low on oil, even after the oil change you should not drive it. The engine sounds like it may be at risk of having a catastrophic failure. If that happens when driving it may not be a good scenario.

Correct. If you do not want to risk major engine failure. And possibly more aggrevation. Yes I would have someone check the engine to make sure it was not damaged from low oil. And to check why the oil was low. Is the engine burning it, or is it leaking, etc...
