Is the cooling fan operating?
Automotive Expert
How are you determining the vehicle overheats? Are you going by the temperature gauge? What are the symptoms associated with the condition? Does the [coolant](/topics-coolant-ford/) boil out of the reservoir?

when I pull over and try to turn on the heater no hot air comes out when it overheatsThere's no leaks or drips as far as I can seenothing comes out the reservoir
Automotive Expert
Got it. This may be just a simple air pocket in the system. Did you do the work yourself?

Yea
Automotive Expert
Okay great. Did you replace the radiator cap? I'm not available for a phone call. I'll opt out and let another expert help you.

How long will that takeHello

after fighting mine for 2 summers I ended up going to ford and buying the water pump with the housing. after replacing 3 aftermarket water pumps and not resolving the issue, when I changed the water pump with the housing from Ford I have not had a problem since. I understand your frustration as a certified technician I was about to pull my hair out. I started by replacing all of what you replaced. bleed ing the air out was so much easier. I live in Texas and summers are brutal here.

Well I've done a thermostat replacement water pump replacement and a radiator swapI don't know what to do nextCan you possibly call?
Automotive Expert
read what I wrote earlier, I started with what you have done and fought the overheating for 2 summers, I went to Ford and purchased the water pump with the housing as a unit and not just the water pump. That was 6 years ago and have not had a problem since. I could see nothing wrong with the housing and just decided there was nothing else left to do and took a chance and it corrected the problem.

water pump and housing replacement will fix it

all I know after replacing the radiator, thermostat, and water pump, checking the head gaskets for combustion gases in the cooling system that was what fixed mine. your car has the same [engine](/topics-engine-ford/) as mine, the car is really a good car, mine has 468k on it, bought it new, my wife drives it daily and will not let me trade it off, she loves that car.

Is there a possible way you could help me find the part number where I can order it from
Automotive Expert
PW564 this the Ford Motorcraft number I would have ford double check it with your VIN number.

Do you want my vin to check?
Automotive Expert
You will need to go to the Ford dealer.

Oh okay
Automotive Expert
My material does not use the vin, but I always have the dealer double check it by vin, since ALLDATA has had mistakes before.

I found it for a direct fit at an orielys near me
Automotive Expert
you can always use that too. good luck.

Tried your advice but it still overheats
Automotive Expert
Have you checked for [exhaust](/topics-exhaust-ford/) gases in the coolant. Most shops have a blck tester to do this. It tells you if you have a head gasket leaking.

If you can call me something weird happened that I think might help us find the issue
Automotive Expert
Since it overheated several times you could have a head gasket leaking. There is not much else to replace. A shop has a tool called a block tester they use to check head gasket for eshaust gases leking into the cooling system.

When my car overheats it’s back to operating tempurature within 5 minutes
Automotive Expert
Is the radiator fan running at full speed?

I believe so they both kick on someone said it might be a sensorMaking the car think it’s overheating
Automotive Expert
That is not hard to try. I am on my way home I will send the location of the sensor when I get there.

Okay
Automotive Expert
Make sure all the air is bled out.Coolant should flow thru the degas bottle when the t stat is open.

T stat?
Automotive Expert
Thrmostat

How do I remove the air
Automotive Expert
You run it it with cap off until bubbles stop coming out of the bottle.

Yeah no bubbles I saw coming up but I’m being told it’s a coolant temp sensor throwing the car off bc of rapid cooling when it overheats
Automotive Expert
Out running errands with the wife. Send the sensor info when I get home.

Okay sounds good sorry to bother
Automotive Expert
Itis ok. That is why i have the app on my phone.

I also found this on the tech repair page in ALLDATA Verified Repair(1) TECH-ASSIST01/06/2016 | 05:48:15 Recommend to disconnect the PCM and the ECT and test the circuits for a short to ground. Comment(1) The Tech tested the circuits and found the ECT signal return wire is shorted causing the gauge to read 254 degrees. He repaired the wire, now the temperature gauge and air conditioning work normally. ATTACHED IS THE CONNECTOR VIEW. THERE IS 3 BLACK CONNECTORS ON THE ECM YOU NEED THE ONE THAT HAS THERED / WHITE STRIPE WIRE IN PIN 21. ALSO THE LOCATION OF THE TEMP SENSOR IS ON THE OTHER ATTACHMENT.
