Q: Exhaust Manifold cracked, does the catalytic converter have to be replaced too?

asked by on March 27, 2018

Took our van in for emission testing. They said that our exhaust manifold is cracked and needs to be replaced. And the said they will also need to replace the catalytic converter because it is connected to the manifold and it comes as a set. Got quoted at about $945 for everything. First does the catalytic converter really need to be replaced? I have seen other people say the manifold and catalytic converter are seperate, but maybe that is just different makes and models of vehicles?? Second is this a good price for the job being done? Thanks!

He’s correct in that the sienna catalyst is integral with the exhaust manifold. That is done by the manufacturer to ensure that the catalyst reaches operating temperature as quickly as possible. It’s not true of all cars so your friends are also correct. 945 is not an outrageous price for the job, but you might be able to save some by contacting YourMechanic. They can send a technician to your home or office to replace your catalyst for you right there on the spot.
