Hi there! I have a 2005 dodge neon sxt. I have replaced new the [battery](/topics-battery-dodge/), belts, tensioner and/or tensioner pulley and a refurbished [alternator](/topics-alternator-dodge/). My car continues to squeal very loud when I turn it on and when I turn the AC or defrost on. When it runs normal, there is a slight squeak, whistle noise. Can you narrow down the problem?? lol Thanks! Mechanic's Assistant: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on? It sounds like it's coming from the front passenger side. The squealing, whistling noise has been on and off since I bought the car in 2017 but it has gotten profoundly louder in the past month or two. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Neon yourself? What have you tried so far? No. My brother was helping me with my car but doesn't have the time to do so anymore. I have to take it to a shop and don't want to be ripped off. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? When I turn the AC or defrost on the battery light comes on.

Hi there, Sorry to hear about all your car troubles. My Name is \*\*\*\*\* \*\*\*\*\* I am an ASE Master Tech here to assist you with your vehicle. Please understand I am not there with you, But I am here to help. Any information about what is going on is greatly appreciated. The system will ask for a phone call, Please let me know if you want this option as I am not always available to do so. I would first start by double checking your work and the parts to make sure you are getting the most up to date and correct parts. The first thing I do when diagnosing a noisy belt system is to remove the current belt. Start the car and see if the noise is still present. If so you have a bigger fish to fry. Start here and let me know the results.

Thank you! I'd have to take it to a shop to remove the belt. My brother lives an hour away and doesn't have time for my car problems anymore haha. I have no tools or knowledge of how to remove a belt.

Gotcha! OK. Well in that case this will be the first step. They will remove the belt to see if there are any more noises now. If no noises then they will spin each pulley to see if one is getting sticky or if the parts are correct for your engine. Now this may just be a weak tensioner that is causing your issue. Which will be a best case scenario. This will cost you about $200-300 depending on the shops cost and this includes the inspection. The worst case scenario is a timing belt. Since this will be behind the timing cover this is a larger job and the price can vary dramatically depending on what they find. But again you will need to remove the belt to find this fault first. But if it is this job will cost closer to $1,000 give or take. If you want I can offer an additional service to find a local repair shop in your area. It is only $10. Please let me know if you would like this option. I will typically find 3 in your area that I would trust to bring my own vehicle to. I always shoot for a 5 start review. If you have any other questions or in need of any other help, please let me know. If you think my answer was not that of a 5 star rating please let me know what I can do to assist you further. I want to answer all concerns that you have about this issue. Tips are not required but highly suggested, I work hard to give you the best answer and appreciate the extra thank you on your side. Thank you for understanding and thank you for using Just Answer!

I'm going to look into timing belts. I think it was March 2019 that I had the tensioner replaced. My upper engine mount was broken at the time so I don't know if that has anything to do with the tensioner becoming weak. It has been replaced since then. I think I paid around $370 to have the tensioner and belt replaced.

If it was that new there is a solid chance that it will still be covered under warranty. I would suggest looking into that first. Especially because aftermarket tensioners just do not live up the the quality as factory parts.

I'm starting to remember more about the time it was replaced. I texted the shop that replaced the tensioner 2 months after and said it was squealing again. Would I need to contact the shop to ask about the warranty?
Automotive Expert
I would ask them about it yes. Especially bring up the note that you texted them just after the last repair and that issue has not resolved since.

Car makes clicking sound when engaging gear and also while driving on low speeds
Hi there. The clicking sound when you change the gear from 'P' to 'R' sounds like it could be either a motor mount (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/engine-mount-replacement) or a worn CV joint (axle) (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/axle-cv-shaft-assembly-replacement). I'm inclined to lean more to the axle with...
