No it sounds like it's in the [engine](/topics-engine-chevy/).. it still runs even if the ac is offNo belts are turning tho

Okay, thank you. Your vehicle is equipped with a **fan clutch which** is a thermostatic engine cooling **fan** that can freewheel at low temperatures when cooling is not needed, allowing the engine to warm up faster, relieving unnecessary load on the engine. As temperatures increase, the **clutch** engages so that the **fan** is driven by engine power and moves air to cool the engine. A fan clutch will make a rather loud roaring noise when first started.

to repair do I need a fan assembly?
Automotive Expert
First check it to make sure it is bad. Test it with engine **cold** and off. If you can **spin** the **fan freely** , it is bad. If good there will be considerable resistance.

If it is bad then I need the whole assembly?
Automotive Expert
Once removed, the fan blade separates from the fan clutch assembly and only the clutch is replaced.

I have to wait for the engine to cool so I'm gonna go ahead and ask. If it's not the clutch what would be the problem?
Automotive Expert
There really isn't anything else it could be. The fan is connected to the [water pump](/topics-water-pump/) which is run by the belt. So, the water pump cannot turn freely with the belt installed. The fan clutch operates separately form the water pump.

Ok thanks!
