Hi, I have a 2011 Chevy Cruz Sedan with roughly 130k miles on it. around august 2020 i smelled a plastic smell similiar to a bad pump smell. It overheated in August 20. Took to Bob Summerall they replaced the hoses. Started smelling that plastic smell again and had to take it back two weeks later. Thermostat was stuck open. Now about a month ago Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the coolant? Have you checked for a leak in the cooling system? My oil light came on a month ago and it said low oil pressure stop [engine](/topics-engine-chevy/) now. took to Summerall again they said that my oil pump needed replaced. and they also fixed my timing belt. a week later smelled rubber from the timing belt. took back and they "fixed" it again. Last night oil pressure warning alarm went off and my engine started knocking while idling. Mechanic's Assistant: What is the model of your '11 Chevy? Cruz Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your vehicle yourself? What have you tried so far? No. I've taken it to Bob Summerall even after my warrenty expired when They replaced the hoses back in August. It's been VERY expensive fixes and I'm almost feeling like they aren't fixing the actual problem. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? It seemed all the problems started when it hit 100k and above. I do routine maintenance to the car and have always. I almost feel like im being swindled.

Good morning Jacob. Nice to see you today! I'm sorry to hear you are having this problem. I know this can be frustrating. Please give me one moment to type out some information for you. Sit tight one minute. I'll be right back !

Okay
Automotive Expert
Thank you for holding Jacob, The fact that the oil pressure alarm is sounding again as well as the engine knocking indicates that the engine is not producing oil pressure and since they have already replaced the oil pump then that means they need to recheck there work, providing the engine oil level is okay then the lack of oil pressure again indicates that either the new oil pump is defective and or there are worn engine bearing not allowing the engine to build and hold oil pressure. You need to return the car to them right away and if the engine is knocking then it should not be driven but instead towed to avoid any further damage to the engine.

That's exactly what I did last night when I noticed the knocking. I used my triple aaa and had it towed from the interstate back to bob summerall with a note in their overnight box telling them that the same issue they fixed less than a month ago is acting up again. I'm still waiting to hear from them. But i wanted to know from a mechanic other than the ones at Summerall what the problem might actually be. If the new Oil pump is defective, could something else cause the pump to go bad that fast that maybe they are overlooking?
Automotive Expert
About the only thing that could cause the new pump to fail so quickly would be sludge build up in the engine that could cause the oil pump to starve for oil but that should have been found when they replaced the pump . It also possible the new pump was just defective. They need to tear it back down and do a close inspection including the crankshaft bearings for abnormal wear.

thank you. I'm gonna go up there and see what they say the problem is and give them my checklist of what I want them to check. Theyve already taken thousands of dollars in on the same problem. and at this point I'm honestly feeling ripped off by their shop.
Automotive Expert
I can sure understand the feeling of being ripped off, hopefully, they can get it right for you this time and I would insist that this repair be covered by them and not by you as well.

Thats what we're hoping for. At this point the repairs are nearly exceeding the blue book and i still owe 7grand on it
Automotive Expert
Okay, hopefully, they can get it resolved for you.

Fingers crossedThank you for the help today
