Q: Car stopped while driving.

asked by on July 25, 2017

I was driving my 2007 Kia Optima with 98000 miles on it when I stopped at a red light. The car turned off and I couldn't turn it back on. The key was stuck in the ignition and I couldn't turn it or pull it out. The ac, radio and lights were still running. All the warning lights were on in the car. I called a tow truck and after about 20 minutes I decided to try one last time and this time it turned on like nothing had happened . I drove it this morning but am scared this will happen again with my kids in the car. It's been really upwards of 95 degrees and don't want to be stranded on the street or highway with them. I won't be able to take it to a mechanic until Friday. What could have caused this? Also, my air bag light turned on a week ago. it always used to turn off when I buckled my seat belt and now it doesn't. I don't know if that's related. Thank you.

If the problem only occurred once, it is likely due to an electrical fault. A real time scanner might reveal engine controls operating out of range and that might provides clues as to the faulty system or component. Check for diagnostic trouble codes. If no codes have been stored, you can consider the typical causes for stalling which are a faulty mass airflow sensor, faulty camshaft or crankshaft position sensors, worn spark plugs, wires or defective ignition coil(s), inadequate fuel delivery or pressure (clogged fuel filter, injectors, faulty fuel pump or pump circuit), contaminated or old gasoline, defective throttle position sensor, faulty idle air control valve, leaks in the EGR system, intake vacuum leaks, and so forth. If you request an engine stalling diagnostic the responding certified mechanic will get this resolved for you promptly. With regard to the airbag warning light, that is unrelated to the stalling and the cause of that fault can be pinpointed during an airbag warning light diagnostic.
