Q: Why is my engine light on and idling up and down after thermostat change?

I changed thermostat...put new gasket in ,rtv silicone ,grinded all residue off block and component...it leaked for a minute. Then stopped...my engine light is on and idling up and down now

My car has 245000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.
