Q: Why Does an Engine Idle Fast or Slow?

asked by on November 30, 2015

Why does an engine idle fast or slow?

Several factors can cause a fast or slow engine idle. Running the air conditioning or defroster will speed up the idle speed of the engine. Components that impact the engine idle speed include the idle air control motor valve, air intake boot, and PCV valve or crankcase ventilation system. Monitoring the idling of the engine can prevent other issues and long-term damage.

Will a bad crankshaft position sensor cause my car to turn off while at a stop light?

Hi there. The issue could be one of the following. Check The fuel pressure could be low or dropping when the engine is stalling out - possible fuel pump failure The crankshaft position sensor could be shorting out or...

Engine light comes on and idles roughly.

Single cylinder misfires are usually caused by ignition components which is where I would start with on this car. Verify the ignition cap and rotor are still in one piece and that the wires are not arcing losing spark. Have...

Truck shutting off when idling.

The cylinder heads on this engine are aluminum and are known to warp if the engine has been over heated or the cooling system was compromised or the head gasket fails. This would let coolant to possibly get into one...

Starts but won't stay running

This may be caused by many different things such as low fuel pressure, low voltage to the fuel injectors, dirty fuel injectors, a vacuum leak, a faulty Oxygen sensor or a dirty or failing idle air control valve. Any of...

Car whistling, rough idle.

This sounds exactly like the symptoms of a vacuum leak. When the engine inhales air through an opening it is not supposed to is a vacuum leak. The whistling sound is due to the air being drawn in through a...

My car idles rough when stopped

This may be a sign of a leaky injector or potentially an incorrect idle air adjustment. A leaky injector can cause a rich fuel condition as it may leak too much fuel into a cylinder not allowing the combustion cycle...

Red lined engine by accident and now the engine idle is higher than normal. Smell something burning like rubber.

Hi there. The engine revving up higher than normal could be caused by the idle air control valve (IAC). The valve could have gotten stuck when the engine was throttled rapidly when first started. Check the IAC and see if...

Car won't stay crunk

This may be a result of a dirty or failing idle air control valve. The idle air control valve reads the air intake as it is mixed with fuel prior to being injected into the engine at low speeds and...
