My car won't start. The battery seems to be working fine because I can turn the lights on and off but when I turn the ignition to start the car it goes black like the battery is dead. Then the alarm goes off. Mechanic's Assistant: Did you test the battery with a voltmeter? And have you ever changed one before? I did not. Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 2002 Toyota [Avalon](/topics-avalon/) Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Avalon yourself? What have you tried so far? Not much just tried charging the battery, tapping the [starter](/topics-starter-toyota/) and looking at the [alternator](/topics-alternator-toyota/) because I had a similar problem like this last winter where the alternator belt had fallen off. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? Nope Thankyou

So it does the same thing with a new battery Then Its likley a failed starter its not a alternator issue.. I would have the starter replaced

Could it possibly be the battery terminals or battery cable that may need to be replaced? I had to replace the starter in my old car but the alarm never went off which would be signifying a low battery right?
Automotive Expert
it could be verify good connections on the battery cables and verify a good battery charge

Could you list any other possibilities that you think it may be if when I put the key in the ignition lights and everything works but when I turn the key there is one click and everything turns off like the battery is dead.
Automotive Expert
catter cable or bad ground weak or failed battery bad starter or a seized [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/)

Awesome. Thanks so much.

Timing chain replacement on a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina
Don't waste your time this early. Timing chains are made of metal. If it's a rubber timing chain, then yes, you may want to change it. But the metal timing chain isn't worth it if it's only at 68,000 miles....

You may have damaged the windshield washer reservoir (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/windshield-washer-reservoir-replacement). My engine oil has been drying up every 3 months and I can't seem to find any leaks. What could be causing the drying do fast?
All engines use a little oil over time (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/What-Does-It-Mean-When-My-Car-Is-Burning-Oil_3). If you are using less than a quart of oil for every 750 to 1000 miles with no leaks, then this is considered normal and no action is needed. You should...
CV Axle failure.
Hello there, without knowing which parts the dealer determined to be faulty I can only offer general advice for your 2011 Dodge Ram 1500. The CV shaft, CV boots, and axle assembles are common repair items, any one of these...
Squeaking noise comes from wheels as it spins.
If the noise does not exist with the vehicle stopped (i.e., due to engine noise), then it is likely due to wheel bearings or the brakes. If brake related, unfortunately these sorts of noises can be related to the use...
Where is the fuel shut off switch located
Your vehicle does not use an inertia switch that cuts off the fuel. There is a fuel pump relay in the fuse box in the engine compartment. If the vehicle was involved in an accident, the SRS system may have...

I'm looking to purchase a 2013 Acura TL from an Acura dealership in Wisconsin, but I wanted to make sure rust wasn't an issue.
Rami: The areas of immediate concern when it comes to rust are brake and fuel lines and suspension or frame components. Rust on exterior sheet metal (body panels) is somewhat "cosmetic" although of course I understand that nobody wants to...
