Hello, thanks for the question. There are a few issues that can cause the gear shift to get stuck in park. One is that the transmission linkage itself has bound up and will need to be replaced. More common however , the problem has to do with an electronic sensor not telling the computer that you have your foot on the [brake](/topics-brake-toyota/). This sensor is called your brake light switch. The first step to check if you can move the gear shift is by turning the key just one click forward and attempting to move the shifter. If it moves now, then we know the linkage is okay. After that, I would perform a visual check on the brake light switch up on top of the brake pedal itself. If all looks good, then we can move on to checking the sensor's resistance and seeing if the sensor is functioning properly. Let's start there and see what you find. Thanks!
