Q: Shifter lever flapping in the breeze

asked by on

Shifter lever on steering column , not working Like it's not hooked up. Checked cable seems to be good Can shift trans by hand at trans

My car has 17300 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

The shift tube in the steering column most likely broke. The shift tube is made of a weak pot metal and can break in the column. Here is a link to a picture of a broken tube in the steering column. You will need the steering column taken apart to replace the shift tube by a mechanic like one from YourMechanic.
