Q: Shifter cable

asked by on

Will loose shifter cable keep my truck from starting

My car has 72421 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Yes. The shifter cable moves the shift linkage on the transmission to select the proper gear needed. If the transmission is not shifting to park or neutral, then the neutral safety switch on the transmission will not let the starter get a crank signal from the ignition switch. If you would like to have a precise diagnosis for the starting issue, an expert from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect and address the problem.
