Q: My car has a high pitch chirping sound when accelerating. 2010 Subaru Impreza

asked by on January 07, 2017

My car is making a high pitched chirping sound, kind of like a bird chirping, i only hear it when im on the road and i am pressing the gas. The sound becomes louder as the gas pedal is pushed farther down. However if i press the gas while im on neutral, it does not sound. It doesnt sound either if my car is parked and i rev it on neutral or in a gear. I started to hear the sound after i changed my headers about a week ago so i thought it could be an exhaust leak but i feel like its not. Anyways i dont know a whole lot about cars and im hoping i can get an answer because this sound is extremely annoying. Thank you

My car has 138000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

Engine is running louder than normal Inspection $94.99 - $114.99 Get a Quote

Hi - your Impreza has a turbocharged engine for enhanced performance. This produces pressurized air for the engine, increasing power. To avoid over-pressurizing the engine, there are boost pressure controls, and a "waste gate" port to vent over-pressure - all electronically controlled. This can produce "chirping-like" noises under acceleration, especially during and after gear changes for manual transmission cars. This is normal behavior, and shouldn’t cause concern. If it seems excessively loud, I would recommend an engine inspection by a mobile, professional mechanic, such as one from YourMechanic, who will come to your location, diagnose this problem, give you an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs.

Truck doesn't start after sitting for over a year
Hi there. If your truck cranks normally but doesn't start, suspect a problem with fuel or spark delivery. Spark can be checked using an inline spark tester and fuel pressure can be checked with a gauge. If the engine doesn't...

Engine misfiring, black smoke out of tailpipe
Hello. The conditions you described could result of a fuel injector o-ring leakage, a fuel injector control module intermittent failure, or a glow plug failure (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-bad-or-failing-glow-plugs). Where is the Coolant Temperature Sensor located?
Coolant temperature sensor is located at the upper radiator hose where it connects to the engine. Should be a green plug connector just to the left of the hose.
Check engine light came on. Had it checked and it was a right wheel speed sensor. Showed code error. Is this a serious problem?
Hi, thanks for writing in. With a failed wheel speed sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-wheel-speed-sensor), your anti-lock brakes, traction control and/or stability control systems will not function properly. These systems rely on wheel speed sensors to determine when and if braking needs to...
Car is shifting hard using a lot of gas and getting hot
Hey there. This may be due to a few different things such as a transmission speed sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-speed-sensor-replacement), a failing transmission control module, or potentially low transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service). As you may know, the transmission uses hydraulic pressure created by...
