Q: Power steering

asked by on February 28, 2018

Noticed a whining 2 weeks ago. My dad looked and saw my power steering reservoir needed more fluid. Thought it was an easy fix but. Within the next week it was making the same noise along with a burning smell. We filled the reservoir again and called my mechanic. He couldn’t fit me in until the best week so I tried my best to not use my car but I needed to get around. He replaced a hose and I got it back yesterday but now it’s the next night the steering wheel was very tight and made a loud groaning noise every time I moved the wheel at all, no matter how little I turned it. The fluid was already completely gone so I added more and drove it down my street to let it get into the system. But as I pulled out of my driveway it had already dripped in the driveway. And I’m 100% positive that nothing spilled when I was pouring it.

My car has 189010 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Advice on buying a used Ford Ranger
They are both old cars, so my advice is to buy the 2001. If it's 3,000 dollars cheaper, and has the same mileage, then you should go for that. It's the mileage that is more important - that is the...
Car alarm goes off for no good reason. At times I have seen the hood ajar error.
Hi, thanks for writing in. Your car is equipped with an anti-theft system which functions based upon the use of sensors that detect the car's points of entry (i.e. doors, trunk, hood, etc). When the anti-theft system is set (usually...

Engine went into "limp home mode with power train fault wrench indicated in dash. It will not accelerate. Not pulling any load.
Hi there. Your vehicle's wrench light, Check Engine Light and lack of performance go hand in hand. The vehicle's PCM (powertrain control module) has recognized a fault and put the vehicle into limp home mode. It could be, a throttle...

After couple mins driving brakes make a deep squealing sound with pulsing in the brake pedal.
Hi there. In most cases, when the brake pedal pulses, it's due to either a problem with the ABS sensors or a brake rotor that is warped. A warped brake rotor can occur when the wheel is too tight on...
my 2005 cadillac escalade wont shift out of first gear what can be the problem
Hi there. Thanks for your email to YourMechanic.com's Ask a Mechanic. In most cases, when a transmission will not shift out of first gear, it is due to one of two things. First, and most common; is due to dirty...
What can cause a rattle in the front end while driving straight, that goes away when you turn any degree?
Depending on the condition of the brake pads (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/brake-pads-replacement), they may also cause a bit of rattling if they are in need of being replaced. I would suggest having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose and...
